On the second Friday of June the annual Sports Gala of Torrevieja is held with prizes awarded to various individuals and groups for their participation in their chosen sports. Over this weekend there are many activities and tournaments, including a Fun Bike day, Football Sala with the under-16s of various top teams, rhythmic gymnastic competitions and demonstrations plus many, many more.
Sports activities abound in the area so there is no reason not to keep a bit fit. It could be a gentle walk along the long promenade or one of the new green routes in the parks, or gentle aerobics by the Red Cross throughout the year on the Playa del Cura in the early morning. Many private gyms offer advice on training sessions depending on age, health and fitness. Dancing is another great way to keep fit and apart from many municipal and private schools Torrevieja's OCIO pensioners discothèque has not only classes in various types of dancing, but regular dances, which is a fun way to keep fit.
The Municipal Sports Offices are located in the Princesa Cristina Stadium and information on the many sporting events can be obtained from there.
Football is obviously very popular among the young and there are many municipal and private teams for children in the area, playing in a variety of leagues. The Torrevieja FC is now a professional Third Division team that has one of the biggest supporters clubs in Spain under the title of the Torry Army. For more info http://www.fctorrevieja.com/

Water for golf courses
There are many pros and cons about the ever-growing number of gl courses in Spain and how they will be irrigated. Arguments include that they are more profitable than arable land and provide tracts of green in an otherwise bleak landscape. Constructors claim that watering the courses will be through recycling the residue from the accompanying housing estate, which begs the question as to where the potable water comes from for the houses in the first place.
The Minister of the Environment has stated that they will not place obstacles in the way of the development of 20 golf courses in the Cuenca de Segura water basin. This will raise the number of courses to 35 in the area, either already authorised or in project. Among those now with a green light are:
