This year the Easter celebrations are earlier than usual starting on Palm Sunday on the 16th and the first short procession of Jesus on an ass accompanied by the guild of St. John the Evangelist with people waving palm fronds and olive branches. The evening procession begins and this is a short one introducing guilds that appear on most nights. Last year some processions were affected by rain and the new trono of The Last Supper did not appear, so watch out for it this year. Once again the International Cofradia will shoulder the huge setting of Jesus in the Garden of Olives and they are looking for new members www.loscostaleros.com Holy Week or Semana Santa is a busy time in Torrevieja and the nightly processions are much more than a tourist attraction as it is full of drama, street storytelling, music, tragedy, and even fun. 23rd is Easter Sunday and the final 8.30 morning procession when the Risen Jesus meets his mother. 31st March is San Vicent Ferrer, a local Valencian and Murcian saint and is a local holiday with people celebrating a picnic day. Apart from processions there are various concerts held in Torrevieja.
The church of SS Peter & Paul on Tabarca Island will be fully restored this month after being burned during the Spanish Civil War 1936-39.
March Pilar de la Horadada Holy Week processions: Last year these wonderful cofradias had a new statue that of Nuestra Señora Consuelo de los Affligidos, by Murcian sculptor Antonio García Mengual. Over 5,000 people participate in this week’s processions in the eight cofradias, making this one of the most important groups in the Vega Baja area along with Orihuela and Torrevieja. Nine of the ten images are carried on the shoulders of men and women, which is a great achievement for a town that has only been in existence for 21 years.
