In the midst of winter Flamboyant February means Carnival time is at hand. Most towns will have some form of celebrations, especially in the schools. Torrevieja has a committed committee that plans all year round for several events. Foremost are the three parades and the opening concert, the Murga, in the Theatre Municipal. The first small parade is in the town centre using many of the previous year’s costumes. The largest parade is from the plaza Asuncion, just up from the playa del Cura, and this wends its throbbing, vibrant colourful way to the town centre, taking almost three hours to get there. The following weekend there is a night parade, which is shorter but even more pulsating as it is mostly adults and they have got their dance routines to samba music off pat. This is a Leap year so there are 29 days in this month and ladies can ask the man of their dreams to marry them, so lads watch out for those carnival queens. Lorca has a great carnival followed by magnificent and unique Semana Santa fiestas. http://www.ayuntalorca.es/fiestas/fiestas.asp?id=87
Throughout this month in the RENFE railway station exhibition centre in the Acequión district of Torrevieja is an excellent art exhibition by TAKE 5. This is a group of five talented professional painters who have come together to demonstrate their diverse types of painting. See our Culture page for more information.
